From Colored To FashionAFRICANA

Written by Styling By Chi

Black history, health, and art are three staples that meliorate the experience of advocacy, expression, and centering for Black artists. The City of Pittsburgh has been blessed with two art organizations that go by the names of “The August Wilson African American Cultural Center”, and “FashionAFRICANA”. These organizations strongly value the creative, emotional, physical, and historic well-being of Black artists. As Juneteenth quickly approaches our horizons we will see the emergence of celebrations, from cookouts to plays, to community gatherings. On June 17th at 1:00 PM EST, (Juneteenth weekend) you, my dear readers will have the privilege to share your story and be a part of “From Colored To Black” a process that will “culminate in a new multi-media play, utilizing arts and culture to engage the Pittsburgh community in critical dialogue around how systemic racism is directly connected to the health and wellness outcomes in the Black community” and feature the three winners of the 2023 August Wilson New Voices (AWNV) monologue competition, Javian Ortega-Rodriguez, Christopher Russell and Jordyn Walker. (Side note: FashionAFRICANA is particularly excited as AWNV is part of its educational offerings through the Bill Nunn Theatre Outreach Project.) This beautiful day is only made possible through the partnership between DEMASKUS Theater Collective (DTC) (Founded and Produced by the incredible Shaunda McDill in 2005, DTC is a brilliant collective that is marrying historic and vivid storytelling with soulful and unapologetically Black and faith-filled work), EnterChange Group, and the University of Florida’s Center for Arts in Medicine. If there’s one thing FashionAFRICANA swears by, it’s the DEMASKUS Theater Collective and this historic event. Register for “From Colored To Black”!
