A Day At The August Wilson House

Written by Styling By Chi

Every artist needs a space to be nurtured and poured into. The August Wilson House, (created in honor of the late great playwright, August Wilson) an arts center in Pittsburgh’s beloved neighborhood “The Hill District” provides extensive art and cultural programming to the community by nurturing every artist to come, and it’s beautiful to see. Our Founder and Executive Director Demeatria Boccella, was able to get up close and personal, this past Wednesday, July 5, 2023 and see where the magic happens and how it’s causing a ripple effect to everyone that comes in contact with it. This day was a day full of inspiration, history, and good energy. Our very own Demeatria Boccella, along with August Wilson CEO Denise Turner, Board Member, Dr.Ervin Dyer, and First Lady of Pittsburgh, Michelle Gainey, were blessed to be able to feature special guests Ronald Hall (previously featured on FashionAFRICANA) and award-winning actor Kevin Mambo. It brings us such joy to be in spaces, surrounded by individuals that share the same goals and heart postures as FashionAFRICANA. With individuals like these deeply embedded in the art community, the future looks bright for our next generation of artists.

A Sit Down With Ronald Hall

A few months back FashionAFRICANA was privileged to visit the beautiful 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair at the Manhattanville Malt House in Harlem, New York. This fair was composed of talent people only dream of meeting. Well, this past week dreams came true! We were given the honor of meeting Pittsburgh native, and I-54 featured artist Ronald Hall. Ronald Hall is the epitome of veracity and authenticity, and we’re grateful to have highlighted him on the FashionAFRICANA platform and experienced his grace in person. From Colored To FashionAFRICANA

Written by Styling By Chi

Black history, health, and art are three staples that meliorate the experience of advocacy, expression, and centering for Black artists. The City of Pittsburgh has been blessed with two art organizations that go by the names of “The August Wilson African American Cultural Center”, and “FashionAFRICANA”. These organizations strongly value the creative, emotional, physical, and historic well-being of Black artists. As Juneteenth quickly approaches our horizons we will see the emergence of celebrations, from cookouts to plays, to community gatherings. On June 17th at 1:00 PM EST, (Juneteenth weekend) you, my dear readers will have the privilege to share your story and be a part of “From Colored To Black” a process that will “culminate in a new multi-media play, utilizing arts and culture to engage the Pittsburgh community in critical dialogue around how systemic racism is directly connected to the health and wellness outcomes in the Black community” and feature the three winners of the 2023 August Wilson New Voices (AWNV) monologue competition, Javian Ortega-Rodriguez, Christopher Russell and Jordyn Walker. (Side note: FashionAFRICANA is particularly excited as AWNV is part of its educational offerings through the Bill Nunn Theatre Outreach Project.) This beautiful day is only made possible through the partnership between DEMASKUS Theater Collective (DTC) (Founded and Produced by the incredible Shaunda McDill in 2005, DTC is a brilliant collective that is marrying historic and vivid storytelling with soulful and unapologetically Black and faith-filled work), EnterChange Group, and the University of Florida’s Center for Arts in Medicine. If there’s one thing FashionAFRICANA swears by, it’s the DEMASKUS Theater Collective and this historic event. Register for “From Colored To Black”!

BACK DOWN FA LANE

Written by Styling By Chi

“Gardeners instinctively know that flowers and plants are a continuum and that the wheel of garden history will always be coming full circle.” - Francis Cabot Lowell. It’s great to be great, but it’s even greater to share that greatness with the community you’re surrounded with. I’m a firm believer that everything done with honesty and integrity will go through the spin cycle of what I call alignment. FashionAFRICANA is no stranger to alignment, the work they’ve done for over a decade never ceases to amaze those who’ve watched their trajectory. FashionAFRICANA has cultivated safe spaces for Black creatives; storytellers, models, visual artists, and has presented the work of many iconic visionaries including the one and only BLITZ THE AMBASSADOR aka Blitz Bazawule

Who is Blitz Bazawule? I’m glad you asked! Ghanaian-born, Blitz Bazawule is a brilliant filmmaker and musician who performed at the Kelly Strayhorn Theater in 2011 in celebration of FashionAFRICANA’S 10th Anniversary, and he’s the director of the highly anticipated film “The Color Purple'' featuring the talented cast of Halle Bailey (Nettie), Elizabeth Marvel (Miss Millie), Taraji P. Henson (Shug Avery), Louis Gossett Jr (Old Mister), and Colman Domingo (Mister). FashionAFRICANA has celebrated artists and their work we’ve all come to know and love, and I couldn't be more grateful.

As we take a trip back down FA (FashionAFRICANA) lane, we will find ourselves at the intersection of Mr. Bazawule’s direction. Check out the trailer below! And, be sure to follow FashionAFRICANA as there will be a very special event in celebration of The Color Purple opening in December 2023.

The Beauty Of Multimedia Fashion And Its Intersection Between Black Fashion and Style

Written by Styling By Chi

The beauty of multimedia fashion and its parallels with Black fashion, style, and creativity is inspiring. Black people are the developers of fashion, style, and trend reports. As I like to say, there is nothing new in fashion that a Black person hasn’t already created out of their wardrobes. From acrylic nails, oversized jeans, and grills, to gold hoop earrings, Black people have shown time and time again that fashion doesn’t move forward without them. While Black people carry this "unspoken societal responsibility” gracefully, they must have safe spaces that celebrate,  uplift, empower, and advocate for their authenticity, creativity, and ingenuity. FashionAFRICANA, The Gallery by Mui, Create Art Together, & SHEER Worldwide are all spaces that reinforce and empower Black creativity. One of the best parts about multimedia fashion and its intersection between Black fashion and style is the limitless prospects that can be pushed forward the moment Black creatives are nurtured, acknowledged, and fostered. Fortunately for everyone, the spaces that are being created by such confounding individuals are turning this intersection into a parking lot for Black artists.

Is Black Fashion Inherently A Political Statement?

It all begins with an idea.

Written by ShanTorrian Rayewood
Image Art by Stephanie Lange for FashionAFRICANA

February 26, 2022, marked the 10th year anniversary of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin's tragic murder. Since Martin’s death in 2013, organizations such as the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation Inc. have grown into a global movement to end police brutality, eradicate white supremacy, and affirm the lives of all Black identities [BLMGN].[1] The formation of BLMGN marked a shift into a new political era where social awareness, intersectionality, and authenticity are utilized to expand definitions/representations of activism. Taking inspiration from previous civil rights eras, Black protestors and allies are strategically utilizing physical appearance through clothing to effectively communicate political beliefs. Similar to the Black Panther Party of the late ‘60s and ‘70s, which utilized all-black leather militant ensembles, and the Civil Suit era of the ‘50s and ‘60s which favored respectable church attire, Martin’s murder along with the BLMGN have popularized everyday fashion as a political tool. As argued by Executive Editor at WWD Tara Donaldson in Dress and Protest: Fashion Hasn’t Been a Bystander in the Black Civil Rights Movement, “dress is as much a political statement as a fashion one” and through each “iteration of the ongoing movement for civil rights, Black people have strategically embraced certain styles in moments of protest.”

Through platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter, consistent visual messaging along with hashtags such as #sayhername and #Blacklivesmatter have created a space that links the everyday Black identity to the fight for Black liberation. Summer 2020 was a perfect example of style being used as a form of resistance to systemic oppression. Black T-shirts with bold white declarations, casual streetwear looks, and protective dystopian outfits with pride flags stitched on, could be seen throughout protests across the globe as people of all ages, orientations, and backgrounds rallied together to demand justice for 46- year-old George Floyd who was murdered by police on May 25th in Minneapolis, MN. In addition, celebrities such as English Supermodel Adwoa Aboah and Futbol Player Marcus Rashford, appeared on the August 2020 edition of British Vogue titled Activism Now wearing all black Black Panther-inspired outfits.[2] As a reaction to the murder of 26-year-old Breonna Taylor on March 13th, renowned actress Regina King accepted her 2020 Emmy for the HBO show Watchmen wearing a T-shirt with Taylor’s name and the statement “say her name.” Likewise, four-time Grand Slam singles champion Naomi Osaka wore a black mask with white letters spelling out Taylor’s name during the U.S. Open to continue bringing attention to the “genocide of Black people at the hand of the police.”[3]

Style has always served as an adaptable social justice framework to communicate ideas of Black beauty, power, and liberation.[4] While dismantling systemic oppression may not end with slogan T-shirts, viral hashtags, and striking social media posts, fashion is a powerful and accessible tool that can unite people together. Though surface level identity expressions are often seen as nonsensical and frivolous, how one takes up space through physical appearance is an effective tool to communicate a group's message. From clothing, hairstyles and social media engagement, Black people and allies are sustaining strong communities that empower and embrace the personal as political.
